UDM hails decision not to prosecute EC mother who killed daughter’s rapist

JOHANNESBURG – An Eastern Cape mother who attacked her daughter’s alleged rapists and killed one of them has been labelled a courageous hero.

The 55-year-old woman from Komani was arrested last month.

The court on Monday heard that the senior state prosecutor declined to prosecute after reviewing the docket.

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) Women’s organisation says that while it does not support crime, it believes that the mother acted courageously to protect her 27-year-old daughter’s life.

The organisation’s secretary-general Thandi Nontenja says that no mother would have been able to fold her arms while her daughter was being raped in front of her.

Nontenja says that the organisation will continue to support the survivor and her mother because even though the charges have been dropped, their lives will never be the same.

“It was in self-defence, it’s not like she went all out to kill somebody. She had to defend herself and her daughter.
