Accused rapist gets 40 years as habitual offender

A 48-year-old Houma man facing forcible rape charges was sentenced to 40 years in prison Thursday as a habitual offender.

Timothy Elliot, of 122 Howard Ave., was already facing home invasion, kidnapping and rape charges but will serve the next four decades behind bars after District Judge Juan Pickett determined he is a repeat offender.

“He had a lot of pending charges that we no longer have to pursue now because of the habitual offender sentence,” said Assistant District Attorney Chris Erny, who filed the repeat offender bill against Elliot last year. “He could have faced 20 years to life, and in this case the judge gave him 40 years.”

According to the Houma Police Department, Elliot burglarized his estranged girlfriend’s Eliza Street home in 2014 and sexually assaulted her. The victim told police Elliot forced her to leave her home and drive

Quincy rapist found to be ‘habitual offender’

QUINCY – A jury on Wednesday deemed a man convicted in October of a Quincy rape to be a habitual offender, which mean he’ll be spending the next two decades in prison.

Ricardo M. Barbosa, 39, formerly of Randolph, has remained in custody for the past three years since he was arrested for a rape in Houghs Neck in Quincy.

After being indicted for that rape in May 2014, Barbosa, convicted a decade earlier for raping a child, was found guilty in October of the 2013 assault.

He was also indicted in 2014 for being a “habitual offender;” that meant that if he as convicted of this more recent rape, he would face another separate jury trial to determine if that “habitual” label should stick, resulting in a longer prison sentence.
