Despite legal questions, Wilson rapist must register as a sex offender, judge rules

Despite legal questions surrounding Megan’s Law in Pennsylvania, a convicted Wilson rapist must register as a sex offender, a judge ruled Monday.

Offenders such as Jason A. Davies “are the reason registration requirements exist,” Northampton County Judge Samuel Murray wrote. “If there was ever a sexual offender case warranting registration requirements, it is this one.”

In July, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court threw Megan’s Law into disarray, finding that the state’s latest version of the registry was so harsh that, unlike its predecessors, it had become a form of punishment and not merely a tool to educate and inform the public.

As a result, the 2012 Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) can’t be applied looking backward, to cases that predated its enactment, the court said. Doing otherwise violates the U.S. and Pennsylvania constitutions, which ban after-the-fact punishments, the decision said.

Sex offender sues ECSO over ‘defamatory’ billboard calling him sexual predator

An inmate is suing the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, claiming one of its billboards mislabeled him as a sexual predator, instead of a sex offender.

The lawsuit was initially filed in Escambia County court in September 2016, but a summons was sent to both the ECSO and Sheriff David Morgan on Thursday. The suit also names Escambia County and the city of Pensacola as defendants, and according to court documents, summons were sent to both parties last month.

More: Sheriff to commissioner: ‘Your district … will see a reduction of patrol coverage’

In his complaint, Kenneth Cobb claims the sexual predator designation, which is a higher level than sex offender, was “false and defamatory.” He claims the billboard went up some time in 2014.

Pedophile priest Shanley’s new home bringing scrutiny to sex offender housing

As pedophile former priest Paul Shanley settles into his new home in Ware, 5 Investigates discovers he’s living in a hot spot for high-risk sex offenders, meaning he may have to move if one state lawmaker gets his way.

“Hi Mr. Shanley, how are you?” 5 Investigates’ Mike Beaudet asked him.

“Good,” the former priest answered before shutting the door of his new home in Ware.

The 86-year-old Shanley has kept a low profile since his release from prison in July after serving 12 years for rape and abuse of a child.

Shanley moved onto Pulaski Street in Ware, to a property where two other Level 3 sex offenders live, right across the street from a new dance studio and a school bus stop.

Their landlord is Joel Pentlarge, yet another Level 3 sex offender.

In all, Ware has 19 Level 3 sex offenders living in town.
