KZN child rapist sentence will send a strong message – provincial commissioner

Durban – KwaZulu-Natal’s top cop has welcomed the life sentence handed to an Empangeni child rapist, saying that it would send out a strong message.

“This will send a strong warning to the would-be criminals who think of committing the same crime and abusing vulnerable children. I further thanked the community members who came and assisted the victim, but discouraged them from taking the law into their own hands,” Acting Provincial Commissioner Major-General Bheki Langa said.

The Empangeni Regional Court sentenced the 51-year-old man on Monday after he was convicted of the rape of a 6-year-old child on June 3, 2017 in Matshana.

Steamboat sexual predator given 50-year prison sentence

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A Routt County judge on Friday handed down a 50-year prison sentence to a Steamboat Springs man that District Attorney Brett Barkey described as one of the most insidious child sexual assault predators in recent history.

Miguel Diaz-Martinez

Diaz-Martinez, who worked in construction, was accused of exchanging drugs for sex with underage girls, and he was originally charged with 41 felonies.

In September, a trial was avoided. The 61-year-old Steamboat man accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to three counts of human trafficking for sexual servitude, five counts of trafficking of minors for sexual servitude and one count of attempted sexual assault.

During that September hearing, Martinez appeared hesitant, and Judge Shelley Hill had to ask him three times whether he was still pleading guilty.

“Well, it seems like I have to plead guilty right now,” Diaz-Martinez said through an

Prosecutor resigns after lenient sentence for blind rapist

An Oklahoma prosecutor has resigned after negotiating a plea deal that gave probation to a legally blind man who raped a 13-year-old Texas girl at a church camp.

Murray County District Attorney Craig Ladd said he disliked the way the case was handled. On Wednesday, he announced the resignation of David Pyle, the assistant prosecutor who handled the case.

Pyle said Monday that a major factor in his decision not to insist on prison time was that the defendant was legally blind. Instead, Benjamin Lawrence Petty, 36, was sentenced to 15 years’ probation after pleading guilty to first-degree rape and other charges.

“I want it to be known that I strongly disagree with the lenient manner in which the Benjamin Petty case in Murray County was prosecuted in many respects,” Ladd said.

Under the terms of his probation, Petty will be required to wear an ankle monitor for 24 months,
