Woman questioned by her alleged kidnapper, convicted rapist

OAKLAND — A woman who said she was kidnapped but managed to escape in Berkeley earlier this year was questioned by her alleged kidnapper — a six-time convicted rapist — on Wednesday.

Sitting on the witness stand Wednesday at the Rene C. Davidson courthouse, victim “Jane Doe” testified against defendant Whittier Buck Buchanan, 60. In a bizarre scenario, because Buchanan is representing himself in his trial, he’s able to cross-examine the woman he allegedly kidnapped.

Buchanan is charged with kidnapping to commit a sex crime, assault with the intent to commit a sex crime and failing to register as a sex offender after an address change, following the events on May 2 in Berkeley.

The woman, who looked mostly down behind her black thick-rimmed glasses, repeated the night’s events as the jury of seven men and five women listened. On the night of May 2, she was sitting on the front steps of her apartment

To serve … and endanger? Philly police blunder puts woman on rapist’s radar

It had been a good night. A bit too good, actually.

She’d had too much to drink, after going out with friends to celebrate a co-worker’s birthday. So she left her car and took a cab home.

On her way to the front door, she dropped her purse, and — just that fast — two teenagers on bicycles sailed past, swooping up the purse with her keys, cash, and cell phone inside.

She shouted at them, demanding her purse back. But the thieves had joined a group of about 20 people gathered outside across the street. Some shouted back. Before long, they were on her. Their punches and kicks kept coming until the police arrived.

That’s where it should have ended.

But her night was about to get much worse.

By morning, she would be sitting, half-naked and bloodied, on a stranger’s stoop in an unfamiliar neighborhood. She would shrink from the Good Samaritan who stopped

Prison for rapist who broke woman’s skull during attack in front of infant

HIGHLAND PARK — A 24-year-old man who admitted to beating and sexually assaulting a borough woman at gunpoint in front of her child was sentenced Monday to 23 years in state prison.

Brandon Cox, of the Somerset section of Franklin Township, will be required to serve 85 percent of the term before he can be released on parole. He will undergo parole supervision for life and must register as a sex offender.

Cox, who prosecutors said has sexually assaulted three female victims in seven years, pleaded guilty in June to kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault in the Feb. 19 attack in Highland Park.

At about 5:30 p.m. that day, Cox approached a 36-year-old woman walking with her 9-month-old son on Harper Avenue and asked for directions, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Allysa Gambarella said.

He then pulled out a gun and forced them into the basement

Woman whose rapist was granted joint custody of child speaks out …

The woman whose rapist was given joint custody of the child conceived in the attack has spoken out about the “crazy” decision.

A judge in Michigan signed an order allowing twice-convicted rapist Christopher Mirasolo joint custody of the boy – which he had not requested – without the mother’s knowledge after she applied for state benefits.

The woman was 12 when Mirasolo raped her in 2008. A plea deal meant he served less than a year behind bars for third-degree criminal sexual assault, according to US media.

The woman’s lawyer said the order, now put on hold, was “insane”. Rebecca Kiessling told Detroit News: “The judge also restricted the child’s domicile and residence, disclosed the rape victim’s home address to her rapist, and ordered his name on the birth certificate – all without the mother’s consent or any opportunity to be heard.”

Now the victim has spoken

Woman whose rapist was granted joint custody of child speaks out

A local prosecutor and judge in Michigan are under fire for giving a convicted rapist joint legal custody of his victim’s eight-year-old son. Christopher Mirasolo pleaded guilty in 2008 to attempted third-degree criminal sexual assault. Last month, Sanilac District Judge Gregory Ross signed an order allowing Mirasolo joint custody rights of his victim’s child. It came after she applied for state aid.

The judge put the order on hold Tuesday after learning of Mirasolo’s background. A hearing is scheduled for this month. CBS News’ Tony Dokoupil spoke to the victim and her attorney about their effort to protect other rape victims from facing painful legal circumstances.

“I don’t understand why they thought they needed to give him joint legal custody. He was my rapist,” said Tiffany, who was 12 in 2008 when she says Mirasolo forced himself on her in an abandoned house near Detroit.

Now 21, she’s raising her 8-year-old

Woman who killed her daughter’s rapist will not face murder charges, prosecutors say

A South African woman who stabbed a man to death and severely injured two others after allegedly catching them raping her daughter has been told she will not face murder charges, following a public outcry.

The woman, who has been dubbed “Lion Mama” by the South African media, told police she had stabbed the three men at an unoccupied house in the village of Qumbu in the Eastern Cape, after she found them attacking her daughter.

She said she had been told about the attack by the 18-year-old cousin of the man who died and had tried to call the local police but received no answer.

When she got there, she found the three men taking it in turns to rape her daughter and stabbed them all repeatedly until they collapsed, she said. The mother has not been named in order to protect the identity of her daughter.

She described the suspect as a tall, heavyset 40-something-year-old white man with a tattoo on his lower right leg, possibly with an Asian theme.

The victim was treated at the Nancy J. Cotterman Sexual Assault Treatment Center.

Anyone with information should call Detective Yvette Martinez at 954-828-5784 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
